5 Organizations That Will Pick Up Your Used Items for Free

Moving presents an excellent opportunity to help those of us who have fallen upon hard times. It is also a great time to de-clutter. So, why not combine both the practical and charitable? Here are some of the best places to donate your used item.

  • The Salvation Army: The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. They help people who have undergone disasters and those who suffer from hunger, poverty, etc. They have even joined the fight against human trafficking. You can be assured that when you donate to this venerable organization your items will be put to good use. They will accept your furniture donations, appliances, kitchen items, automobiles, and more.
  • Goodwill: Another well respected organization that has been helping the less fortunate for more than a century is Goodwill. Founded in 1902, the organization has more than 2,800 stores in the U.S. and Canada so they are near everyone. The items you donate helps others and the money raised goes to various initiatives, including job training and placement programs.
  • Amvets: This organization is focused on supporting U.S. war veterans, both active duty servicemen and women and those who have served honorably. Founded in 1944, they accept small furniture and appliances, clothing and accessories, toys, electronics, bedding, and more. Additionally, you can arrange a free pick up of your unwanted items.
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore: Operated by Habitat for Humanity, ReStores sell new and gently-used home items like furniture, building materials and kitchen appliances. If there is one in your area you can drop off smaller items. They will pick up larger items for you.
  • The Arc: The Arc is the youngest of the organizations listed above but it has 600 local chapters and over 1,000 national and community programs. Its focus is on people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. They accept items such as furniture, clothing donations, shoes, books, toys, kitchen items, electronics, decor, cars, and more.

Just remember to contact these organizations first and to research their websites to find out what they do and do not accept. Also, be sure to clean your used items prior to donating them.
